Making Tax Digital returns filed on time for a fixed fee

Making Tax Digital is what most sole traders, landlords and company directors ring us about now. It means records kept in software and quarterly updates sent to HMRC instead of one return a year.

Most people we speak to have been told to buy software and left to work the rest out. We set it up, keep the books and send every update from them. Tax investigation cover is included free for every client, and every HMRC investigation we have handled, we have won.

In one lineSupreme Consultants is an AAT licensed accountancy practice in Cardiff Bay that handles Making Tax Digital for sole traders, landlords and limited companies across South Wales. Fees are fixed and agreed in writing before work starts, and tax investigation cover is included free for every client.

Is your Making Tax Digital set-up in good hands? Three questions.

Answer with the buttons, no email needed.

Question 1 of 3

Does your accountant reply the same working day?

What you get

Tax investigation cover at no charge

It is included free for every client we act for. Every HMRC investigation we have handled, we have won.

Every quarterly update sent on time

We diarise each date and file from the books we keep, so you are not the one watching the calendar.

Answers the same working day

Ring us when a figure does not look right. Calls, meetings and emails are never charged for.

What owners tell us before they call

These are the three things we hear most about digital filing.

  • “HMRC wrote to me about Making Tax Digital and I have no idea what I am meant to do.”

He left the letter for three months and then had a full quarter of records to rebuild from a carrier bag.

  • “My accountant told me to buy software, then billed me for the call when I asked how it worked.”

She stopped asking and sent a quarter in with the wrong figures.

  • “I keep everything on a spreadsheet and nobody has told me whether that still counts.”

He found out in the week the first update was due.

  • What changes once we take it on

We check when the rules reach you, move your records into software and bring them up to date. Each quarterly update goes to HMRC from the books we keep. The fee is in writing before any of it starts.

How this compares with your current arrangement

Both set-ups file your figures. The difference is who carries the work.

A typical high street accountant

Tells you to buy software and leaves you to it.

Bills for the call when you ask how it works.

Hears from you once a year, after the year end.

Sells tax investigation cover as an add-on.

With Supreme Consultants

We set the software up and move your records across.

Calls, meetings and emails are never charged for.

Every quarterly update is diarised and filed by us.

Tax investigation cover is included free.

Eight questions about your Making Tax Digital set-up

Answer these honestly and you will know how exposed the next quarter is.

  • Do you know whether the rules apply to you yet?

The date you are brought in depends on your income, and we check it for you.

  • Are your records kept in software HMRC recognises?

A spreadsheet on its own will not carry the quarterly updates.

  • Is somebody diarised to send each quarterly update?

We put every date in our calendar rather than yours.

  • Do you know what the bookkeeping will cost each month?

Ours is a fixed fee agreed in writing before we start.

  • Are your receipts captured as they come in?

A box emptied in January turns one evening of work into a week of it.

  • Does anybody check the figures before they reach HMRC?

We review each update against the bank before it is filed.

  • If HMRC opened a check, would somebody handle it?

Tax investigation cover is included free for every client we act for.

  • Have you had a reply from your accountant this month?

We come back the same working day, and if the answer needs longer we tell you when to expect it.

Your final declaration, self assessment and any corporation tax come out of the same records.
VAT returns alongside

What a fixed fee changes about asking questions

A retail client came to us having sat on a year of small questions, because her old accountant invoiced for a ten-minute call. We agreed one fixed monthly fee in writing before any work started.

Clients described by type. Names withheld.

No extra invoicefor calls, meetings or emails, at any point in the year
How it was found
She rang in her first week about a quarterly figure that looked wrong, and we corrected it that day.
What happened
She asks the small questions as they come up now, which is usually where the money gets saved.

I just want to say a big thank you to Mudassir for all the advice, guidance and help he has provided whilst dealing with my accounts and tax returns. From start to finish the service has been excellent and professional. Unlike other accountancy firms they provide a friendly personalised service, I was very clear on the process and was even provided with additional guidance where needed. Highly recommended!

Who we are not right for

We cannot take on a business that is already late in an HMRC investigation.

Making Tax Digital: questions people ask

How much does Making Tax Digital cost with an accountant?

You pay one fixed fee, agreed in writing before any work starts, covering the bookkeeping, the quarterly updates and your year-end return. The figure depends on your turnover, whether you are VAT registered and how tidy the records are. Calls, meetings and emails are never charged on top, so asking a question costs nothing.

Can you take over Making Tax Digital from my current accountant?

Yes. We send the professional clearance letter so you do not have to tell them yourself, get appointed as your agent with HMRC and Companies House, and move your records across. Migration to Xero is free, the first month is free, and we handle Companies House ID verification at no charge where it is needed.

What happens if HMRC writes to me about a late quarterly update?

Send it to us and we deal with HMRC directly. We check what was filed and when, correct the position and respond for you, and where a penalty can be appealed we appeal it. Tax investigation cover is included free for every client we act for, and every HMRC investigation we have handled, we have won.

Do I have to change my bookkeeping software?

Only if what you use now will not carry the quarterly updates. Plenty of clients come to us on spreadsheets or a shoebox, and we move them onto Xero free of charge and set it up so receipts are captured as they arrive. If your current software works, we will say so and leave it alone.

When does Making Tax Digital start applying to me?

It depends on the type of income you have and how much of it there is, and the dates have moved more than once. We check your position against your last return and tell you which quarter you are first caught by, so you are not guessing. If you are not in scope yet, we say that too.

Do you work with sole traders and landlords outside Cardiff?

Yes. We are based at Titan House in Cardiff Bay and over 90% of our clients are across South Wales, including Newport, Swansea, Caerphilly, Port Talbot and Barry, plus Bristol over the bridge. We also act for clients elsewhere in the UK, some fully remote and some a mix of remote and in person.
